Do you believe every adult deserves the literacy skills they need to thrive? Join Literacy NRV — a dynamic nonprofit helping hundreds of adults across the New River Valley achieve independence through literacy. We’re seeking an innovative, collaborative, and mission-driven leader to guide our organization into its next chapter of impact and growth.


The Executive Director (ED) will oversee the operational, financial, and programmatic success of Literacy NRV, working closely with the Board of Directors to advance our mission, strengthen community partnerships, and inspire staff and volunteers. This position offers flexibility, creativity, and meaningful leadership in a small but powerful nonprofit.


As Executive Director, you will:

  • Lead and support a passionate team of staff and volunteers delivering adult literacy, ESL, and workforce readiness programs.

  • Develop and implement strategic goals in partnership with the Board of Directors.

  • Manage budgets, fundraising initiatives, and grants to sustain and grow programs.

  • Build strong community partnerships with local governments, funders, and agencies.

  • Champion Literacy NRV as its public ambassador, advancing our mission through storytelling, outreach, and advocacy.

  • Oversee daily operations with a focus on efficiency, collaboration, and inclusivity.

About Literacy NRV

Literacy NRV is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (ProLiteracy member and United Way of Southwest Virginia partner agency) providing free instruction in reading, writing, math, digital literacy, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), as well as GED and U.S. citizenship exam preparation.

  • Annual Budget: $250,000

  • Team: 1 full-time and 4 part-time staff

  • Volunteers: 150+

  • Learners served annually: 350 adults



We’re looking for a strategic, creative, and community-minded leader who brings:

  • 3–5 years of nonprofit or equivalent leadership experience;

  • Proven skills in fundraising, grant writing, donor relations, and partnership building;

  • Experience in staff or volunteer management;

  • Strong communication and storytelling skills;

  • Comfort with digital tools and social media;

  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Bonus points for bilingual skills (especially Spanish) and/or familiarity with adult basic education principles.

Compensation

Salary: $50,000 Benefits: Health stipend, retirement contribution, generous paid leave, flexible schedule, and professional development funding.
