At the end of December, Literacy NRV will say goodbye, for now, to someone who has become an integral part of our organization and our community: our Volunteer Coordinator, Brittany Williams Hash.
Brittany joined Literacy NRV in August 2022, and in the 3½ years since, she has made a lasting impact on nearly every part of our work. From strengthening volunteer recruitment to completely reimagining how we train, support, and engage our tutors, Brittany helped build systems that are stronger, more welcoming, and more sustainable for the long term.
She managed our partnership with the New River/Mount Rogers Workforce Development Board and helped lead the implementation of our LACES database, an enormous undertaking that has transformed how we collect, understand, and use data in our daily work. Her attention to detail, organization, and deep knowledge elevated our programs in ways that will continue to benefit Literacy NRV for years to come.
But Brittany’s impact goes far beyond systems and spreadsheets.
She brought warmth, care, and genuine joy into her work with us. Brittany has a remarkable ability to make people feel seen, supported, and valued, whether they were a brand-new volunteer, a long-time tutor, a student navigating major life changes, or a fellow staff member. Our volunteers and students know she truly cares about them, and our staff have come to rely on her steady presence, enthusiasm, and bright energy that filled the office.
As many of you know, Brittany will be leaving Literacy NRV at the end of the year to stay home with her daughter, with another little one arriving early next year. While we are so happy for her and this next chapter in her life, she will be deeply missed.
When we announced her departure, Brittany shared these words with us:
“Literacy NRV has changed my life and transformed my heart in ways I never expected. It’s been such a privilege to be a part of a village that offers a safe, loving and accepting environment for every learner, volunteer and staff member. I adore the relationships I’ve built and the experiences they’ve brought. I am still very much dedicated to the mission and look forward to partnering with Literacy NRV in a volunteer role moving forward.”
Brittany’s dedication, creativity, leadership, heart, and laughter have left a permanent mark on Literacy NRV. The roots she planted here through relationships, programs, and care for people will continue to grow long after her last day in the office.
As Executive Director Ginny Ayers shares:
“Brittany has shaped Literacy NRV in ways that will be felt for years to come. Her ability to build trust, support volunteers, and lead with both heart and excellence made our organization stronger. We are so grateful for her time with us and excited for this next chapter in her life.”
Brittany, thank you for everything you have given to Literacy NRV! We wish you all the best in this next season of life and are thankful that you will always be part of the Literacy NRV family.
