Board Member Spotlight: Elizabeth Towson

Elizabeth Towson joined Literacy NRV as a volunteer tutor three years ago. Having moved to the area, she was looking for volunteer opportunities where she could make an impact. From tutoring English language learners and helping students prepare for the GED, that's exactly what she's done!

Elizabeth joined our Board of Directors in 2023, deepening her involvement with Literacy NRV and making even more meaningful change through higher-level participation in strategic planning, event execution, and policy updates.

We asked Elizabeth to share more of her story about how she got involved:

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

I was born in Roanoke, but spent most of my life in the Washington, DC metro area.  Moving to Floyd County several years ago, I am enjoying outdoor activities and all the beautiful green spaces here.

What inspired you to volunteer for Literacy NRV and how long have you been volunteering with us?

I became a Literacy NRV volunteer about three years ago because I believe strongly that literacy improves people's lives.  The ability to read, write, and communicate helps us to participate more fully in society, and that is a very powerful thing.

What is your favorite thing about volunteering with Literacy NRV?

My students!  Working with each of them, whether they are learning English or preparing for the GED, I am always impressed with their enthusiasm and commitment to learning.  Despite busy schedules, they manage to make the time to pursue their goals.

What would you say to someone who's thinking about volunteering?

We can all make a positive impact in the life of another person.  It's one of the most rewarding things you'll ever do.

What's a fun fact about yourself?

I am learning to play the banjo.  It has given me a real appreciation for learning something completely new and outside my comfort zone.
