Literacy NRV is seeking an organized, relationship-driven, and mission-minded Volunteer Coordinator to support and grow our vibrant community of 150+ volunteer tutors and instructors. This part-time position (20 hours per week) plays a vital role in ensuring adults across the New River Valley receive high-quality basic literacy, ESOL, and workforce readiness support.

The Volunteer Coordinator leads the recruitment, training, support, and retention of Literacy NRV’s volunteer tutors and instructors. This position serves as the primary point of contact for volunteers and works closely with staff to ensure strong matches between volunteers and learners. This is a flexible, part-time position offering meaningful impact within a small but dynamic nonprofit team.
As Volunteer Coordinator, you will:
Recruit and Onboard Volunteers
Develop and implement strategies to recruit volunteer tutors aligned with organizational needs.
Conduct monthly Volunteer Information Sessions.
Lead semester-based Tutor Academy training sessions.
Screen and assign volunteers based on skills, availability, and program fit.
Foster Volunteer Engagement and Retention
Cultivate a welcoming and supportive volunteer culture.
Implement regular check-ins, feedback surveys, and appreciation initiatives.
Plan volunteer recognition efforts and events.
Address challenges and celebrate successes within the volunteer community.
Coordinate Volunteer Assignments
Match volunteers with learners for one-on-one tutoring, group classes, and other program needs.
Collaborate with program staff to ensure learners and volunteers are well-supported.
Provide Training and Development
Identify and address training needs, including best practices in adult literacy, ESOL, and trauma-informed instruction.
Coordinate ongoing workshops or skill-building opportunities.
Maintain up-to-date training materials and resources.
Track Data and Report Impact
Record volunteer hours, assignments, and engagement data.
Monitor volunteer impact and identify areas for improvement.
Prepare volunteer reports for internal use, grants, and board presentations.
Ensure Policy and Compliance
Maintain and update volunteer policies and procedures.
Support confidentiality and professionalism standards.
Address and resolve volunteer-related concerns as needed.

About Literacy NRV
Literacy NRV is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (ProLiteracy member and United Way of Southwest Virginia partner agency) providing free instruction in reading, writing, math, digital literacy, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), as well as GED and U.S. citizenship exam preparation.
Annual Budget: $250,000
Team: 1 full-time and 4 part-time staff
Volunteers: 150+
Learners served annually: 350 adults

We’re looking for someone who brings:
Experience in volunteer management, nonprofit work, education, or related fields.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Ability to build relationships and foster community.
Comfort with data tracking and digital tools.
Initiative, adaptability, and attention to detail.
A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Bonus points for bilingual skills (especially Spanish) and/or familiarity with adult basic education principles.

Compensation
