English for Life students and volunteers discuss health-related topics in a Tuesday morning class

Our "English for Life" English language classes began mid-September and we’ve had wonderful turnout! Literacy NRV is currently offering five free English classes in Montgomery County. We also have one-on-one tutoring pairs meeting throughout the New River Valley. Our classes are a welcoming, safe place for students to study English, meet new people, and participate in the community.

For example, our classes at the YMCA in Blacksburg have studied how to ask for a translator in healthcare settings, discussed the effects of AI, learned new vocabulary in describing the weather, and learned about insurance. In these topics, we concentrate on improving pronunciation and building language confidence. Literacy NRV considers the classes as the place to practice English for our students’ lives. We do all of this with the engagement of passionate volunteers.

English classes are not only a place to learn and improve skills but also to build community and make new friends.
