Literacy NRV Classroom Assistants

Becoming a Classroom Assistant

Are you interested in working directly with adults to improve their skills but can't commit to a full year of tutoring?

Literacy NRV classroom assistants provide tutoring support during our 7-10 week long classes. Our lead instructor will manage lesson planning and classroom organization; classroom assistants help with tracking attendance, greeting students, distributing resources, and tutoring students in breakout groups or individually during class.

Classes include English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), family literacy, digital literacy, financial literacy, health literacy, and U.S. citizenship and GED preparation.

Eligible volunteer classroom assistants:

  • Can commit to volunteering at a Literacy NRV 2-hour class once a week for a period of 7-10 weeks (varies by class type)

  • Are at least 18 years old

  • Have at least a high school diploma and read at a 12th grade level or higher

  • Have the ability to communicate clearly

  • Are patient, flexible, non-judgmental, and supportive

  • Have sensitivity to other backgrounds and cultures

The pathway to becoming a volunteer classroom assistant:

  1. Join us for a Volunteer Information Session.

  2. Following the session, complete a volunteer application and volunteer agreement.

  3. Attend a one-hour orientation meeting prior to the beginning of the class (details will be provided).

  4. Meet with lead instructor for additional training as needed.
